As the Photo/Video Manager for Nola.com and The Times-Picayune, I don’t get to shoot as much as I used to, but I do have the rare privilege of directing a staff of extremely talented photographers. We have some really, really creative and dedicated people on our staff, which make my job a joy most of the time. (Won’t talk about those other times!)
One of the big transformations that has taken place within newspaper photojournalism over the past 5 years has been the emergence of video. From something we knew virtually nothing about back then, we’re now starting to produce some of the best documentary video work being done anywhere.
Not surprisingly, the people that were the best still picture storytellers are turning into some of the best video storytellers. It’s a lot of new stuff to learn–adding motion to your images, understanding and controlling audio, learning to edit on a timeline–these are all big changes. But change is the only true constant in our business and my folks have all come to embrace it.
Here are two examples of fantastic video work that have recently been produced by members of my staff. The first is a story about living in a slumlord’s tenement in New Orleans, Louisiana, shot by Ted Jackson:
This second piece is about a young girl, orphaned and mostly abandoned, who found salvation and strength through her high school, becoming their valedictorian last May. It was shot by Kathleen Flynn:
As these examples show, newspaper web sites are some of the best places to see serious journalistic videography. Both of these examples have been nominated for regional Emmy Awards.
